Spring 2012 Anime Preview

Spring 2012 is an odd season. With only 3 of the Winter 2012 titles carrying over into this season and with major shounen titles ending their run, including Bleach, Beelzebub, and Gintama', this is likely the largest spring, if not general, anime season, we will have since 2008.

Like last time, the recommendations/expectations categories have been revamped to 5 divisions instead of 4. However, similar to last time, this preview includes license status, premier dates, and a brief synopsis for each show. The preview also includes rollover titles from previous season(s). Shows that have been excluded include: Young Animator Training Projects 2011 (Buta, Puka Puka Juju, Shiranpuri, Wasurenagumo), Furusato Saisei Nippon no Mukashibanashi, Pabu & Mojizu, Zumomo to Nupepe, Ribbon-chan, Arashi no Yoru ni: Himitsu no Tomodachi, Kuromajo-san ga Touru!!, Shirokuma Cafe, Himitsukessha: Taka no Tsume Neo, Gakkatsu!.

As I, Shana-chan, personally watch almost everything that airs in a season, I will list out my personal expectations and opinion of each show. They in no way reflect the anime community's review of the show as a whole. I set my bar pretty high for solid shows so do not let it deter you from trying anything that may be lowly rated here. Also, I do not take any responsibility for any physical or mental damages that may come as a result of watching any particular show.

LAST UPDATED: WEDNESDAY APRIL 25, 2012

Legend:
US License Status: red = Full US market license (streaming, DVD, etc...), Orange = Streaming License, Green = Unlicensed
Expectations: red = poor, orange = mediocre, purple = satisfactory, green = decent, cyan = must watch
Guessed episode counts will have a "?" denoted next to them

New Shows Full Count:
Must Watch: 3
Decent: 8
Satisfactory: 9
Mediocre: 9
Poor: 7
Total: 36
Summary: So after removing all the more children targeted shows, the distribution is a bit heavy on the poorer end. Shirokuma Cafe and Kuromajo-san ga Tooru!! could technically be included here, but I decided to exclude them anyways. It wouldn't have made that much of a difference though. For a spring season with the most new titles since possibly 2008 due to the ending of Bleach, Beelzebub, and Gintama (for now...), it's a rather depressing season with the 3 "must watch" titles likely to blow everything out of the water compared to the rest of the show. Not necessarily a good thing since it gives the highly anticipated Fate/Zero 2 less competition to prove itself as the best series of all time.

Koi-ken! Watashitachi Anime ni Nacchatta!
Based on a popular dating sim game from Mobage. The show will depict the school life of Ren'ai Kenkyuukai (The Society for the Study of Romance) or Koi-ken for short. The protagonist, Shuuzou Tsurumaki, is a second year high school student without a girlfriend and the only thing that is special about him is his "bleak desire" to want change in his life. During spring break, he meets the beautiful and lively tsundere Kaede Wakamiya, who recently returned from Dublin, and former childhood friend, Nagisa Toyama, who is now a popular idol. Minoru Shiraishi (Minoru Shiraishi in Lucky Star, Sakamoto-san in Nichijou), Haruka Tomatsu (Naruko Anjou in Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai, Aoba Tsukishima in Cross Game), and Kaori Nazuka (Tsukasa Ayatsuji in Amagami SS, Eureka in Eureka Seven) voice Shuuzou, Kaede, and Nagisa, respectively.
Premier Date: Thursday, March 1, 2012
Genre(s): Comedy, Romance, School Life
Episodes: 6
US License Status: Unlicensed
Expectations: Mediocre -- For a show with a fantastic cast lineup, including Rie Kugimiya, Ryoko Shintani, Aki Toyosaki, Eri Kitamura, and the ones already mentioned in the description, it's a shame to see this show likely get a short and probably poor show overall. At best a few laughs here and there but considering it's an ONA, it lacks much chance, if any, to prove its worth.

Ozma
An original work by Leiji Matsumoto (Space Battleship Yamato, Captain Harlock). Sam Coin witnesses a young woman, Maya, pursued by several Theseus Sand-borne Destroyers when an Ozma suddenly surfaces. Sam manages to save Maya during this event as the Theseus army believes she died. While Sam allows Maya to accompany him and his sand pirate friends, the Theseus army eventually learns that she is still alive and begins to chase Sam and the sand pirates. Tetsuya Kakihara and Rie Tanaka voice Sam and Maya, respectively. Takahiro Ikezoe (Arad Senki: Slap Up Party) will direct, Junki Takegami (Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, Naruto) will compose, and Gonzo (Last Exile, Black Cat) will animate.
Premier Date: Saturday, March 17, 2012
Genre(s): Action, Sci-Fi
Episodes: 6
US License Status: CrunchyRoll
Expectations: Mediocre -- The original creator is renowned for his genius in his previous titles. Unfortunately, he had the bad luck/idea of partnering up with Gonzo, a studio renowned for poor stories. In six episodes, the show will likely start out very slow and suddenly take a turn to a rushed ending because it is out of time, which is how Gonzo titles usually operate. The past experiences of the director and composer don't give it much hope either unfortunately.

Saint Seiya Omega
The newest series in the Saint Seiya franchise. Ever since the Age of Gods, a Saint is known to appear as any new evil begins to appear. Wielding the arms of the Cross, they fight for the goddess, Athena, who protects Earth. Mars, the god of war, is about to be revived and thus it is time for a new Saint to be born. Morio Hatano will direct, Reiko Yoshida (Bakuman, Kaleido Star) will compose, and Toei will animate (Smile Precure!, One Piece).
Premier Date: Sunday, April 1, 2012
Genre(s): Action, Fantasy, Shounen, Super Power
Episodes: ?
US License Status: CrunchyRoll
Expectations: Satisfactory -- Generally speaking, Saint Seiya has always been hit or miss. While the director lacks show directing experience, the screenwriter has some some solid experience and can write a good story. Toei animation is typical Toei so not much to say there. It has potential, but Saint Seiya has always been at best average unless this becomes the Heartcatch Precure! of the Saint Seiya franchise.

Uchuu Kyoudai
During their early life, the two brothers, Mutta Nanba and Hibito Nanba, made a vow to travel to space. Hibito, the younger of the two, fulfilled that promise while Mutta did not. However, Mutta's life suddenly changes dramatically one day. It is also planned to be adapted into a live action movie and an OVA later this year. Kenn (Yuki Judai in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, Jil in The Tower of Druaga) and Hiroaki Hirata (Sanji in One Piece, Kaburagi T. Kotetsu in Tiger & Bunny) will voice Hibito and Nanba. Ayumu Watanabe directs, Makoto Uezu (Katanagatari, Carnival Phantasm) composes, and A-1 Pictures (Fairy Tail, The iDOLM@STER) animates.
Premier Date: Sunday, April 1, 2012
Genre(s): Seinen
Episodes: 13
US License Status: CrunchyRoll
Expectations: Decent -- While long shows don't necessarily mean they're good, it gives some good amount time for proper character and story development, an aspect that many shows currently lack. The big worry should really come from the director and composer. The director lacks experience in working on a full TV series let alone one of this length (48 episodes is tentatively planned) and while the screenwriter has done some good works like the ones mentioned above, it should also be noted that he worked on titles like Seikon no Qwaser and Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka. Nevertheless, there is definitely hope in this show being quite the worthwhile watch. As an aside, this show already feels a lot like Moonlight Mile.

Hiiro no Kakera
Based on the otome romance game of the same name. Tamaki Kasuga is a 17 year old suddenly moves to live with her grandmother in the countryside after her parents' work forces them to move to Africa. Tamaki's grandmother explains to Tamaki that the village is surrounded by a barrier to seal away the Onikirimaru. As Tamaki's grandmother is the current Tamayorihime and because of her old age, the seal has begun to weaken. Therefore, the task now falls on Tamaki toseal the Onikirimaru again. Of course, Tamaki will not be alone and will be protected by those sworn to protect the Tamayorihime lineage and blood. Marie Miyake (Ringo Oginome in Mawaru Penguindrum) takes on the role of Tamaki. The show is directed by Shirahata Bob (Hetalia Axis Powers, Gravitation) and animated by Studio DEEN (07-Ghost, Junjou Romantica).
Premier Date: Sunday, April 1, 2012
Genre(s): Bishounen, Demons and Gods?, Romance, Supernatural
Episodes: 26
US License Status: CrunchyRoll
Expectations: Mediocre -- What sounds like a decent supernatural story like Natsume Yuujinchou ends up being what seems like a flaky bishounen series. You have a staff full of people who have done pretty boy/bishounen and yaoi titles so the art will likely be okay but the plot advancement in these kind of shows have always been rather stale. Hanasakeru Seishounen comes to mind immediately seeing as that had 39 episodes yet easily could have been condensed in a 13 episode series and at most a 26 episode series like this one.

Shiba Inuko-san
Inuko Shiba acts like a normal middle school student yet her friend, Chako Ishibashi always wonder if Inuko is really a dog or not. However, as a friend, Chako chooses to maintain their friendship and not voice her thoughts out loud. Misaki Suzuki will voice Chako and Mikoi Sasaki (Hercules Barton in Tantei Opera Milky Holmes) will voice Inuko. No information on staff is available.
Premier Date: Sunday, April 1, 2012
Genre(s): ?
Episodes: 13?
US License Status: Unlicensed
Expectations: Poor -- Yet another 5 minute per episode show. Like Morita-san wa Mukuchi and Recorder to Randoseru Do, Shiba Inuko-san continues a similar trend involving abnormal characters. While Morita-san wa Mukuchi was average at best, Recorder to Randoseru was pretty boring overall and I'm expecting this show to be in the same boat.

Gon
A show revolving around the Tekken character Gon. Gon is a tiny dinosaur with an attitude. The show will follow his wild adventures with his friends, who he communicates with without speaking and bites people to teach them a lesson. No other information available.
Premier Date: Monday, April 2, 2012
Genre(s): ?
Episodes: 50
US License Status: Unlicensed
Expectations: Poor -- 50 episodes of 25 minutes each. That's one heck of a long show, and as awesome as Gon is, this is likely going to be a terrible show, especially when implying there is minimal dialogue. Had this been 5 minute episodes I would have reconsidered, but nope, especially since it's taking Gintama''s time slot.

Kimi to Boku 2
A sequel to the Fall 2011 series.Based on a manga of the same name, the story revolves around four teens Yuuta Asaba, Yuuki Asaba, Shun Matsuoka, and Kaname Tsukahara, all of whom are childhood friends. During high school, the half-Japanese transfer student Tachibana Chizuru joins group of friends. Mamoru Kanbe (Sora no Woto, Elfen Lied) will direct, Reiko Yoshida (K-ON!, Bakuman) will compose, and J.C. Staff (Shakugan no Shana, Toradora!) will animate. Kouki Uchiyama (Soul in Soul Eater, Banagher Links in Gundam Unicorn), Ryouhei Kimura (Aki Kuga in Kami-sama Dolls, Hinata in Angel Beats!), Toshiyuki Toyonaga (Ryuugamine Mikado in Durarara!!, Capeta Taira in Capeta), Yuuki Ono, and Miyu Irino (Jinta Yadomi in Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai, Syaoran in Tsubasa Chronicle) will voice the five leads.
Premier Date: Monday, April 2, 2012
Genre(s): Comedy, School Life, Slice of Life
Episodes: 13
US License Status: CrunchyRoll
Expectations: Mediocre -- So I was wrong in the fall about this show being decent. It's not terrible, but still well below expectations. Whether or not the second series will continue this downward trend or provide a surprise reverse remains to be seen.

Yurumates 3D
Based on a 4-koma manga. Yurumates has already been adapted in to two OVAs. Yurume Aida is a ronin student, someone who is hoping to get into university. However, she finds out that when she moves to her new apartment in Tokyo, the apartment has only ever been occupied by other ronin students. To make matters worse, no student in the apartment has ever passed the university exams. Haruko Momoi (Feyris Nyannyan/Rumiho Akiha in Steins;Gate, Sun Seto in Seto no Hanayome) will voice Yurume. Tomohiro Yamanashi will direct and C2C will animate.
Premier Date: Monday, April 2, 2012
Genre(s): Comedy, Daily Life, Slapstick
Episodes: 12?
US License Status: CrunchyRoll
Expectations: Mediocre -- I admit, I'm biased to this show having seen the two OVAs. However, I will say that since the episodes are only 5 minutes long compared to the 40 minute OVAs, this allows for the comedy to probably be played out better. Nevertheless, I'm keeping my expectations low. I do remember a few things being funny in the OVAs, but still pretty poor overall.

ZETMAN
Jin Kanzaki is a strange kid with an angel mark on his hand. He lives a peaceful life with his grandfather and other abandoned vagabonds by the river. However, that peace is destroyed when a monster known as the "Player" appears before him and kills everyone in sight. Jin will be voiced by Daisuke Namikawa (Rock in Black Lagoon, Ulquiorra Schiffer in Bleach) while Osamu Nabeshima (D. Gray-Man, Seikai no Danshou) directs, Atsuhiro Tomioka (Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's, Chrno Crusade) composes, and TMS Entertainment (KenIchi: The Mightiest Disciple, Itazura na Kiss) animates.
Premier Date: Monday, April 2, 2012
Genre(s): Action, Horror
Episodes: 13
US License Status: Viz Media
Expectations: Mediocre -- So I've heard that this show is like the "dark" version of Tiger & Bunny and that it's got some pretty good material. However, I've also heard that the PV shows up to volume 10 of the manga. That's a lot of material for a 13 episode show and the track record of Atsuhiro shows where he doesn't like following source material. I expect this to hurt the series, which is a shame since it has an interesting dark premise with a setup similar to that of Deadman Wonderland.

Queen's Blade Rebellion
A sequel series to the Queen's Blade franchise. The story is set 4 years after the 2009 Queen's Blade series. Annelotte is a rebelling knight princess who stands up against the tyranny of the new queen. A 2 episode OVA was released in 2011 that serves as the prequel to this series. Aya Endo (Sheryl Nome in Macross Frontier, Arisa Kuhouin in Guilty Crown) will reprise her role as Annelotte. Yousei Morino (Himawari!, Kakyuusei 2) is directing, Hideki Shirane (Kill Me Baby, Hayate no Gotoku!!) will compose, and Arms (Elfen Lied, Ikki Tousen - Great Guardians) will animate.
Premier Date: Tuesday, April 3, 2012
Genre(s): Action, Ecchi, Fantasy
Episodes: 12?
US License Status: Sentai Filmworks
Expectations: Mediocre -- Going through the list, Queen's Blade 1 was bad, 2 was average, 3 was bad, 4 was mediocre, and since this is the 5 anime work, the trend shows that this is likely a poor show. The staff isn't exactly competent either. Queen's blade is a franchise that should have ended with the second season if not the third season OVAs at best. Evidently, this show is selling like hot cakes worldwide for some incomprehensible reason.

Naruto SD: Rock Lee no Seishun Full-Power Ninden
Based on a spin-off of the popular Naruto manga and anime. The story focuses on Guy and Rock Lee and their team's strange antics and approaches of becoming the best ninjas. All cast members from the original Naruto series will reprise their respective roles. The anime will be directed by Masahiko Murata (Mazinkaiser, Shikabane Hime), composed by Kento Shimoyama, and animated by Studio Pierrot (Bleach, Level E).
Premier Date: Tuesday, April 3, 2012
Genre(s): Chibi, Comedy, Shounen
Episodes: ?
US License Status: CrunchyRoll
Expectations: Poor -- I hate Naruto with a passion and while this features Rock Lee, it's not really much better. Nothing really much more needs to be said here.

Ginga e Kickoff!!
Shou Oota use to be on a soccer team, that is until it disbanded from a lack of players. However, upon meeting a female professional player, he vows to bring the soccer team back together with a new passion. Yuu Kobayashi will voice Shou with Kounosuke Uda (One Piece, Lovely Complex) as director, Takashi Yamada (Shion no Ou, Heartcatch Precure!) as series composer, and TYO Animations (Tamayura, The Legend of Koizumi) as animators.
Premier Date: Tuesday, April 3, 2012
Genre(s): Sports
Episodes: ?
US License Status: Unlicensed
Expectations: Satisfactory -- Given the garbage that Area no Kishi is/was, I'm not going to hold my breath for this show. However, I will say that with Takashi Yamada on board, maybe there will be a few surprises every now and then. Again, not keeping my hopes high though.

Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? Of the Dead
A sequel to the 2011 Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? series. Ayumu Aikawa is resurrected as a zombie by Eucliwood Hellscythe after being a victim of mysterious serial killings. While it initially seems that Ayumu can continue his daily life as a zombie, he is instead now involved in a world with masou shoujos and vampire ninjas. The staff and cast of the original series will reprise their respective roles.
Premier Date: Wednesday, April 4, 2012
Genre(s): Action, Comedy, Ecchi, Magic
Episodes: 10
US License Status: Funimation
Expectations: Satisfactory -- The first series was certainly a lot of fun, but to be honest, the show was really average at the end of the day. Nothing more and nothing less. Considering it's only 10 episodes this time around though, it likely means that there isn't much material to animate and usually with such short gaps between series, I presume this probably wasn't a very smart move and mostly to just milk the franchise while it's still hot.

Lupin III: Mine Fujiko to Iu Onna
Many people are falling prey to a suspicious new religion. The famous thief, Lupin III, infiltrates the group and hopes to steal the treasure that is kept hidden. However, his infiltration leads to his encounter with a beautiful and bewitching woman who has already charmed the religious group's leader. This is the beginning of the story of how Lupin III meets the fashionable female thief, Mine Fujiko. Lupin III will be voiced by Kanichi Kurita and Mine Fujiko by Miyuki Sawashiro (Yomi Takanashi in Black Rock Shooter, Shinku in Rozen Maiden). Sayo Yamamoto (Michiko to Hatchin) will direct, Mari Okada (Aquarion EVOL, Toradora!) will compose, and TMS Entertainment will animate.
Premier Date: Wednesday, April 4, 2012
Genre(s): Action, Comedy, Seinen
Episodes: 13
US License Status: Funimation
Expectations: Must Watch -- One of the few must watch titles of the season. Lupin III has been a long running franchise and this will be the first TV series that features a new cast for everyone except Lupin himself. Mari Okada as the series composer gives some strong expectations for this series going forward and while I have never seen Michiko to Hatchin, I've heard respectable reviews regarding the title.

Medaka Box
Based on a battle manga by Nishio Ishin (Bakemonogatari, Katanagatari). Medaka Kurokami is a first year student who was elected student council president via a landslide victory of 98%. In addition, she is strong, talented, rich, and wants to help anyone in need. Therefore, she introduces a suggestion box which eventually became to known as the Medaka Box. However, little did she know, this box will eventually bring forth unforeseen and incredible challenges to Medaka and her friends. Aki Toyosaki (Yui Hirasawa in K-ON!, Fam Fan Fan in Last Exile -Gin'yoku no Fam-) will voice Medaka while Shouji Saeki (The Ugly Yet Beautiful World, He is My Master) directs and composes with GAINAX (Neon Genesis Evangelion, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann) providing animation.
Premier Date: Wednesday, April 4, 2012
Genre(s): Action, Ecchi, High School, Shounen
Episodes: 12/48?
US License Status: Sentai Filmworks
Expectations: Satisfactory -- The description of this show screams Sket Dance, which is turning out to be an okay show right now, but didn't start out strong. However, Medaka Box has two (or three) major aspects going for it. First off is the author of the source material, Nishio Ishin. A genius writer for light novels and while this is his biggest manga title of the three he has written, it already has 15 volumes and ongoing. Second is GAINAX, this studio will not let stuff like this fail that easily. Lastly, if you are familiar with Shouji Saeki, he has gone two for two on shows that he directed and composed simultaneously. While they were both average in the end, Medaka Box has hope at the very least. The biggest downer, however, like Uchuu Kyoudai is it was too good to be true for this show to be over 2 cours. In fact, the show has been reduced from 45+ to a mere 12 episodes. How much can it get out in 12 episode remains the big question.

Acchi Kochi
Based on a 4-koma manga of the same name. Tsumiki Miniwa is a tsundere loli is not honest about her feelings to Io Otonashi. In contrast, Io is completely oblivious regarding Tsumiki's feelings for him. As a result, the two high school students have a subtle distance between them that anyone would want to jump in and bug them. Rumi Ookubo (Ako Shirabe in Suite Precure!, Chinatsu Yoshikawa in Yuru Yuri) and Nobuhiko Okamoto (Eiji Niizuma in Bakuman, Accelerator in To Aru Majutsu no Index) will voice Tsumiki and Io, respectively. Fumitoshi Oizaki (Kaleido Star, Romeo x Juliet), Nobuhiko Amakawa, and AIC (Ah! My Goddess, Amagami SS) will direct, compose, and animate, respectively.
Premier Date: Thursday, April 5, 2012
Genre(s): Comedy, Romance, School Life
Episodes: 13
US License Status: Unlicensed
Expectations: Mediocre -- Nothing has really struck me about this series aside from Tsumiki looking a lot like Konata from Lucky Star. However, I should note that I disliked Lucky Star at the end of the day. Fumitoshi aside, the staff isn't particularly notable and even Fumitoshi has done a few wrongs, particularly with Astarotte no Omocha! in the past year. All in all, we're looking at a sub-average show at best. While it is almost certain that I would not blindly recommend this show, I feel as if I will end up enjoying this show for some reason, similar to how A Channel last spring was an interesting surprise.

Sengoku Collection
An original work by Konami Digital Entertainment (Busou Shinki Moon Angel, Ookami Kakushi) In a parallel Senoku Era (Warring States Period), the general names are the same as those in history, but their personality, gender, and appearances all differ. One day, all the generals in this parallel universe are transported to our world and completely lost by the modern day technology. Each episode will focus on an individual general and how she adapts to the modern world. Keiji Gotou (Kiddy Grade, Uta Kata) will direct and Brains Base (Baccano!, Mawaru Penguindrum) will animate.
Premier Date: Thursday, April 5, 2012
Genre(s): Comedy, Daily Life, Ecchi, Fantasy
Episodes: 26
US License Status: CrunchyRoll
Expectations: Poor -- All I can say is stay far, far away from this show. It is effectively the opposite and reverse of Sengoku Otome ~Momoiro Paradox~, which aired this time last year. Keiji Gotou has done some impressive turnarounds for his past works, but considering this project is headed by Konami, I don't see it getting anywhere as a result...not to mention for 26 episodes. Make no mistake, this show is no iDOLM@STER with the individual character episodes. I don't know what Brains Base was thinking when they decided to agree to work on this show...

Sankarea
Chihiro Furuya is obsessed with zombies. He collects figurines, watches movies, and constantly plays games regarding the living dead. More importantly, he's highly interested in zombie girls. When his pet cat dies, he tries to revive it from the dead using occult books. His entire life changes when the idol of an all-girls school passes by while he conducts his experiment. She wishes to die and be reborn as a different person. Ryouhei Kimura (Kodaka Hasegawa in Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai, Shouma Takakura in Mawaru Penguindrum) will voice Chihiro. Mamoru Hatakeyama will direct, Noboru Takagi (Baccano!, C) will compose, and Studio DEEN (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni) will animate.
Premier Date: Thursday, April 5, 2012
Genre(s): Fantasy, Horror, Shounen
Episodes: 13
US License Status: Unlicensed
Expectations: Decent -- The show is labelled as horror, but I highly doubt will see anything as gruesome as Another or Blood-C. However, Noboru Takagi is on this show, meaning we may see something here. C was likely a fluke with Kenji Nakamura heading the project and asking fans after every episode on what they would like to see done in future episodes. Other than C, Noboru has a track record of solid titles, including Durarara!! and Koi Kaze. This show could very well be the sleeper show of the season. Too bad Studio DEEN is animating it though, making them 2 for 2 in this season's list of zombie titles but probably one of the lower quality animators around nowadays.

Natsuiro Kiseki
This is a story of a group of friends: Natsumi Aizawa, a cheerful and frank girl, Saki Mizukoshi, who is perfect in both sports and studying, Yuka Hanaki, a fan of the idol group "Four Seasons," and Rinko Tamaki, who loves music. A slice-of-life tale set in the summer is about to begin. Natsumi, Saki, Yuka, and Rinko are voiced by Minako Kotobuki (Tsumugi Kotobuki in K-ON!, Yuuko in A Channel), Ayahi Takagaki (Ferris Eris in The Legend of the Legendary Heroes, Sumika Murasame in Sasemeki Koto), Haruka Tomatsu, Aki Toyosaki. Seiji Mizushima (Gundam 00, Fullmetal Alchemist) will direct, Tatsuhiko Urahata (Monster, Saki) will compose, and Sunrise (Gundam, Code Geass) will animate.
Premier Date: Thursday, April 5, 2012
Genre(s): Slice-of-Life
Episodes: 12
US License Status: Unlicensed
Expectations: Satisfactory -- The show screams Tamayura all over it...except nowhere remotely close to the same staff. Sphere is back in another show all together this time focusing entirely on them, unlike a certain Hanasaku Iroha. Not to mention that they get both OP/ED themes this time unlike a certain Hanasaku Iroha. Continuing this trend, the staff lacks quality...unlike a certain Hanasaku Iroha. So of course, the show takes away the most important element/requirements for it to be good. Tatsuhiko is not a bad writer but he's not exceptional either as most of his successes have been due to having a good source material to work with. Seiji is a good director too, but hasn't had any experience working with slice-of-life titles; only full-blown action titles. It will be interesting to see how they approach this title but I'm not keeping my hopes up.

Accel World
Based on the light novel series of the same name. In 2045, Harayuki Arita is constantly bullied or pitied by those around him for his pig-like appearance. One day Kuroyuki-hime, the prettiest girl in the school, invites him to meet with her personally. Through a mysterious software, she gives him the access to the virtual Accel World. This encounter will now change Harayuki's status from the lowest of the school caste system to a Burst Linker who must be a knight to protect the princess. Harayuki and Kuroyuki-hime are voiced by Yuuki Kaji (Issei Hyoudou in High School DxD, Shuu Ouma in Guilty Crown) and Sachika Misawa (Cafe in Yumeiro Patissiere). Masakazu Ohara (Mai-Hime, Mai-Otome) directs, Hiroyuki Yoshino (Macross Frontier, Guilty Crown) composes, and Sunrise will animate.
Premier Date: Friday, April 6, 2012
Genre(s): Action, Sci-Fi
Episodes: 24
US License Status: Viz
Expectations: Decent -- After Sunrise's massive stumbling since Tiger & Bunny, they may finally get it right again. My only problem here is Hiroyuki Yoshino is here. I should note that this is the guy who wrote the poor plot of Guilty Crown, created the garbage that is Seikon no Qwaser, and ruined the adaptation of Dance in Vampire Bund.I guess I should also note that he wrote the script for Mai-Hime and Mai-Otome, both of which I enjoyed. So which is more true in this case? I'm leaning more towards the latter. The director of the same series is back this time and so we literally have the entire same major staff for the Mai-Hime and Mai-Otome series, thereby providing a bit of hope for this series. I've also heard the source material is quite good and with 24 episodes, it has some time to develop itself.

Baku Tech! Bakugan
The newest title in the Bakugan franchise. No further information is known.
Premier Date: Saturday, April 7, 2012
Genre(s): Proxy Battles, Shounen
Episodes: 40-50?
US License Status: Nelvana
Expectations: Poor - Another Bakugan title and it looks terrible in comparison with its predecessors. Watch at your own risk.

Upotte!!
Genkoku is a newly hired teacher at Seishou Academy. During his first day, he finds signs in the hallways saying "Keep chamber empty in the school building," "Do not fire in the hallway," and "Keep your safety on at all times." As he wonders what he may be getting himself into, he discovers all the girls have great marksmanship skills. More importantly, they are anthropomorphic with international assault rifles. Genkoku is voiced by Takayuki Kondou (Honda Hiroto in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, Tetsudou Hisakawa in Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai). Takao Kato (Pandora Hearts, To Love-Ru Trouble) will direct, Naruhisa Arakawa (Yosuga no Sora, Erementar Gerad) will compose and XEBEC (Soukyuu no Fafner, Busou Renkin) will animate.
Premier Date: Saturday, April 7, 2012
Genre(s): Comedy, Ecchi, School Life
Episodes: 10
US License Status: CrunchyRoll
Expectations: Poor -- I really hope I don't have to give a reason why here...Literally Strike Witches gone more wrong than it needs to be.

Fate/Zero Season 2
The continuation and the end of the popular Fate/Zero series from Fall 2011. Based on a novel by Gen Urobuchi (Mahou Shoujo Madoka MagicaPhantom: Requiem for the Phantom) and Type-Moon (Shingetsutan TsukihimeKara no Kyoukai ~The Garden of Sinners~), Fate/Zero is the prequel to the popular Fate/Stay Night franchise. The story takes place during the 4th Holy Grail War in the city of Fuyuki, 10 years before the Fate/Stay Night storyline. The previous 3 wars had no winners, and now Kirei Kotomine has been unwillingly dragged into this war. It just so happens that his great arch-rival, the merciless Kiritsugu Emiya is also involved in the war for the Holy Grail. Kiritsugu will stop at nothing to obtain the Holy Grail. Any character that appeared in the 2006 Fate/Stay Night anime will continue to be voiced by their respective voice actor/actress. Ei Aoki (Kara no Kyoukai ~The Garden of Sinners~, Ga-Rei -Zero-) will direct, Gen Urobuchi will compose, ufotable (Kara no Kyoukai ~The Garden of Sinners, Tales of Symphonia) will provide the animation, and Yuki Kajiura (Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, .hack//Sign) will provide the music.
Premier Date: Saturday, April 7, 2012
Genre(s): Action, Fantasy, Magic
Episodes: 12
US License Status: Aniplex USA
Expectations: Must Watch -- And the moment that everyone has likely been waiting for this season. Fate/Zero easily blows everything on this list out of the water. What's more noteworthy is that the second season will likely involve a larger bloodbath than what was seen in the first season. This is a series you really don't want to miss as it will not only set a completely new bar for quality anime, but also one that could very well set the bar for the best anime around! As the new opening by Kalafina of the series states, "to the beginning."

Nazo no Kanojo X
The story follows Akira Tsubaki, who one day notices the anti-social transfer student, Mikoto Urabe, drooling on her desk while sleeping. Out of pure awkwardness, he decides to taste it. Eventually, the two begin to date and gets to know each other better. Akira and Mikoto are voiced by Miyu Irino and Ayako Yoshitani. Ayumu Watanabe is directing, Deko Akao (Pretty Rhythm ~Aurora Dream~, Arakawa Under the Bridge) is composing, and Hoods Entertanment (Seikon no Qwaser, Manyuu Hiken-chou) will provide the animation.
Premier Date: Saturday, April 7, 2012
Genre(s): Art, Romance, School Life
Episodes: 13
US License Status: CrunchyRoll
Expectations: Mediocre -- I'm probably biased a bit about this show, but for some reason, the art bugs me to no end for a show about art. I should also point out that I'm not really impressed with the staff line up for this show. I may be holding my expectations a bit low for this one, but I do honestly think that unless this show pulls a complete 180 on me, it's likely not going to impress.

Kuroko no Baske
Taiga Kagami has just enrolled in Seirin High School where he meets Tetsuya Kuroko on the basketball team. It turns out that Tetsuya is the unknown sixth member of the legendary "Generation of Miracles" basketball team. Together Taiga and Tetsuya decide to take their high school team to the inter-high school championship where Tetsuya's former teammates await. Yuuki Ono (Toshiyuki Karasawa in Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou, Kazuichi Arai in Kimi ni Todoke) and Kenshou Ono will voice Taiga and Tetsuya. Shunsuke Tada (The Prince of Tennis -National Championship-, Bungaku Shoujo) will direct, Noboru Takagi will compose, and I.G. Production (Ghost in the Shell, Guilty Crown) will animate.
Premier Date: Saturday, April 7, 2012
Genre(s): School Life, Shounen Sports
Episodes: 25+1
US License Status: CrunchyRoll
Expectations: Decent -- So in terms of basketball anime titles, we've gone from Slam Dunk to Ro-Kyu-Bu! to this. Baccano's scriptwriter on this and a director that has done Prince of Tennis. While not a golden pair, the series looks to tell a compelling story. I'm not expecting the magnitude of Cross Game or Touch, but hoping at least for something along the lines of Giant Killing or even a compact version of Slam Dunk.

Tasogare Otome x Amnesia
Seikyou Private School is a facility with multiple buildings that connect to accommodate both junior and senior high school students. However, sixty long years of ongoing construction meant the old inner structure has been abandoned with classrooms turning into storage rooms and dark alley hallways. As a result, rumors of the paranormal have begun to spread. Teiichi Niiya is a first year middle school student who gets lost in the maze of the inner structure. There, he meets Yuuko Kanoe, who reveals herself as the ghost of the old school building. Teiichi seems to be the only one capable of seeing his spirit and curious about her death, the two start a Paranormal Investigation Club to unravel the truths and mysteries of the school. Tsubasa Yonaga (Remus in Guin Saga, Aichi Sendou in Cardfight!! Vanguard) and Yumi Hara (Takane Shijou in The iDOLM@STER) will voice Teiichi and Yuuko. Shin Oonuma (ef ~A Tale of Memories/Melodies, Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu) will direct, Katsuhiko Takayama (Ga-Rei -Zero-, Natsu no Arashi!) will compose and Silver Link (C3 -Cube x Cursed x Curious-, Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu) will animate.
Premier Date: Sunday, April 8, 2012
Genre(s): Fantasy, School Life
Episodes: 12
US License Status: Sentai Filmworks
Expectations: Decent -- The entire ef, Natsu no Arashi, and Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu team is back for this project. Unlike C3, which also featured Shin Oonuma, this show has the same composer as the three mentioned titles, bringing much hope to the series. I would rate this higher, but it hasn't fully attracted me just yet aside from the artwork. The premise isn't all too exciting *yet.* Regardless, I've always had fun with Shin Oonuma works regardless, so I look forward to this anyways.

Saki Achiga-hen Episode of Side-A
A spin-off of the 2009 Saki series. The Achiga Girls Academy was once known for its ability to take out regional mahjong powerhouse, Bansei High School. Since then, the academy's mahjong club disbanded. 6 year since, elementary school student Shizuno Takakamo and Ako Atarashi befriends the new transfer student, Nodoka Haramura. The three all enjoy mahjong and had hoped to revive the legend of Achiga Girls Academy. Unfortunately, that dream lasts only until the three split up for middle school. When Shizuno sees Nodoka on television as the national middle school mahjong champion, her goal to revive Achiga's legend rises once again. Shizuno, Ako, and Nodoka are voiced by Aoi Yuuki (Madoka Kaname in Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, Victorique de Blois in GOSICK), Nao Touyama (Yune in Ikoku Meiro no Croisee, Kanon Nakagawa in Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai), and Ami Koshimizu (Kallen Kouzuki in Code Geass, Holo in Spice and Wolf). Manabu Ono (Saki, Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon) directs, Tatsuhiko Urahata composes, and Studio Gokumi (A Channel) animates.
Premier Date: Sunday, April 8, 2012
Genre(s): School Life, Shoujo-Ai?, Sports
Episodes: 12
US License Status: CrunchyRoll
Expectations: Satisfactory -- Not really what I was hoping for when I said I wanted more Saki. As much as I enjoyed the original Saki series, I doubt this one will do better than the original. Lack of shoujo-ai undertones and apparently a lack of epic mahjong from what I've read and heard so far. Depending on how far they get, maybe I'll change my opinion at a later date. Also, the lack of  Koromo (and Etopen) is a bad thing. Though I did hear Yui Ogura will be voicing a role here but it's probably only a supporting one who will barely have screen time.

Haiyoru! Nyaruko-san
Based off a light novel, Mahiro Yasaka is an ordinary boy until he encounters a human-like alien known as Nyarlathotep (or Nyaruko for short). Nyaruko is a silver-haired girl based off of the ancient monster god of the same name (by H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos). Kana Asumi (Poplar Taneshima in Working!!, Yuu Koutari/Strength in Black Rock Shooter) and Eri Kitamura (Karen Araragi in Bakemonogatari/Nisemonogatari, Yui in Angel Beats!) will reprise their roles of Nyaruko and Mahiro. Tsuyoshi Nagasawa (Kyou no Go no Ni, MM!) will direct, Noboru Kimura (Amagami SS Plus, Cosplay Complex) will compose, and XEBEC will animate.
Premier Date: Monday, April 9, 2012
Genre(s): Aliens, Comedy, Parody, School Life
Episodes: 12
US License Status: CrunchyRoll
Expectations: Satisfactory -- All I can say after all the flash anime trolling this series has done for the past two years, I never thought they would go through with a full anime adaptation. Haiyoru! Nyaruko-san is absolutely hilarious. The animation looks fairly decent too but maybe that's just my bias after all that flash animation. I don't see it getting very far to be perfectly honest but I'll definitely enjoy the short easy going gag moments when they occur. If you need a light-heart series this season, this is probably the one to pick up. It's probably not on the same level of epic as Level E, but likely still fun to watch.

Jormungand
Koko Hekmatyar is an unofficial young arms dealer who sells under HCLI. She secretly sells weapons to many countries while avoiding the local authorities and travels with bodyguards composed of ex-military veterans. Jonah is the newest member who is emotionless and skilled in combat yet despises arms dealers. His purpose of following Koko is to find the arms dealer responsible for his family's death. Koko and Jonah are voiced by Shizuka Itou (Akiha Tohno in Shingetsutan Tsukihime, Hinagiku Katsura in Hayate no Gotoku!) and Mutsumi Tamura (Sonya in Kill Me Baby, Kakashi Hatake in Naruto Shippuuden). Keitarou Motonaga (School Days, Katanagatari) will direct, Yousuke Kuroda (Infinite Ryvius, Gundam 00) will compose, and White Fox (Steins;Gate, Tears to Tiara) will animate. A second season is already planned to premier in October 2012.
Premier Date: Tuesday, April 10, 2012
Genre(s): Action, Seinen
Episodes: 12
US License Status: Funimation
Expectations: Decent -- The show screams of Black Lagoon and that is not a bad thing. It's been a long while since we've had such a show and hope to see it live up to expectations.Animation should be interesting and the staff is decently competent. As said before, what's really driving this show is its setting, which has not been seen since the days of Black Lagoon back in 2006, not counting the Roberta's Blood Trail OVAs.

Sakamichi no Apollon
The show is a coming-of-age tale feature love, friendship, and music. Set in the summer of 1966 in the Nagasaki prefecture, Kaoru Nishimi has just transferred to the local high school. Due to his family's constant cycle of moving, Kaoru has constantly found himself needing to readjust to a new environment. That all changes when he meets Sentarou Kawabuchi on his first day at the new school. Kaoru and Sentarou are voiced by Ryouhei Kimura and Yoshimasa Hosoya (Shichika Yasuri in Katanagatari, Kuranosuke Shiraishi in The Prince of Tennis -National Championship-). Shinichirou Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo) will direct, Yoko Kanno (Sousei no Aquarion, Turn A Gundam) will score the music, and Tezuka Productions (Onii-sama e..., Metropolis) will provide the animation.
Premier Date: Thursday, April 12, 2012
Genre(s): Coming of Age, Josei, Music, Romance
Episodes: 11
US License Status: Sentai Filmworks
Expectations: Must Watch -- The first of two new Noitamina titles this spring. There is little doubt in my mind that this series will be good. From the creator and music composer of Cowboy Bebop, this is likely the highlight of the season after Fate/Zero 2. Obviously, the show is very much different from what Cowboy Bebop is so it will be interesting to see how it is approached given only 11 episodes. I should also note that singing goddess Yuuka Nanri will be starring in a main role here as Ritsuko Mukae. This show seems to have a BECK like feel on top of it so I really look forward to how things pan out here.

Tsuritama
Set in Enoshima, Shounan that revolves around 4 boys: Yuki, a high school boy who lacks friends due to poor communication skills; Haru, a self-proclaimed alien who forces Yuki to go fishing with him; Natsuki, a short-tempered boy; and Akira, a mysterious Indian who constantly watches the other three from a distance. This is the tale of these four youths who continue to waste their lives, yet continue to meet and go fishing. This is the beginning of a shounen fishing adventure. The four are voiced by Ryouta Ousaka, Miyu Irino, Kouki Uchiyama, and Tomokazu Sugita (Gintoki Sakata in Gintama, Kyon in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya). Director, composer, and animator are Kenji Nakamura (Mononoke, [C]), Toshiya Oono (Suite Precure!), and A-1 Pictures.
Premier Date: Thursday, April 12, 2012
Genre(s): Sports, Shounen
Episodes: 11
US License Status: Sentai Filmworks
Expectations: Decent -- The second NoitaminA title of the season and a new work by Kenji Nakamura. Toshiya Oono is still a new scriptwiter with Suite Precure! being his only work. It wasn't a bad show, but it wasn't outstanding, especially coming off of Heartcatch Precure! a year ago. Kenji Nakamura's works often start slow so it will likely take some time before it gets off the ground (usually half way). [C] was likely a fluke since he was asking viewer feedback after every episode. Assuming, he doesn't do that here, I think we may have a decent show on our hands. I should also note, one of my new favorite seiyuus, Yui Ogura, is also in this show =D, so I'll keep my fingers crossed for this title.

Eureka Seven Ao
An original work by BONES (Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Ouran High School Host Club) and a sequel to the 2005-2006 Eureka Seven. Set in Iwado, Okinawa, Ao Fukai is a 13 year old boy with a missing father. Ao's mother was taken away a decade ago by unknown individuals. Naru Arata is Ao's childhood friend and had a Yuta power awakened within her due to an incident when she was young. One day mysterious entity known as "Secret" suddenly attacks and Ao's desire to protect the island results in calling forth the Nirvath. Ao and Naru are voiced by Yuutaro Honjou (Ren Karas in Element Hunters) and Kanako Miyamoto. Tomoki Kyouda (RahXephon, Halo Legends) will return as director for the series.
Premier Date: Thursday, April 12, 2012
Genre(s): Mecha, Sci-Fi
Episodes: 26
US License Status: Unlicensed
Expectations: Satisfactory -- Eureka Seven Ao is likely one example of an original work that does not need a new series. Eureka Seven was effectively complete in 2006 and the 2009 movie was disastrous in trying to milk the franchise. Now in 2012, Kyouda is trying again with yet another Eureka Seven title. Personally, I don't see this show getting far even with 26 episodes, but hey maybe it will turn out to be a complete surprise.

Shining Hearts: Shiawase no Pan
An original work by Sega (World Destruction, Valkyria Chonicles). Rick Elwood lives on the island of Windaria, which is inhabited by various races. Amnesiac, he is rescued by Airy Adetto, Amil Manafurea, and Neris Firiam and decides to return the favor by working in their bakery. However, the red moon rises and deathly wind blows. Suddenly they are engulfed in a series of strange events. Hiroshi Kamiya (Izaya Orihara in Durarara!!, Koyomi Araragi in Bakemonogatari) will voice Rick while Airy, Amil, and Neris are voiced by Shiori Mikami (Akari Akaza in Yuru Yuri), Kanae Itou (Amu Hinamori in Shugo Chara!, Ruiko Saten in To Aru Kagaku no Railgun) and Mai Aizawa (Mio Naganohara in Nichijou, Yumemi Hidaka in Sora wo Miageru Shoujo no Hitomi ni Utsuru Sekai). Itsurou Kawasaki (Wild Arms -Twilight Venom-, Arc the Lad) will direct and compose the storyboard while I.G. Production will animate.
Premier Date: Thursday, April 12, 2012
Genre(s): Angels, Fantasy, Shounen
Episodes: 12
US License Status: Unlicensed
Expectations: Poor -- Sega's Shining franchise has always been mediocre at best. This one just spells fail and a complete waste of solid seiyuu talent, particularly Hiroshi Kamiya's and Kanae Itou's. I wouldn't even consider this a shounen series to be honest. If you want a good fantasy series go watch Fate/Zero or The Twelve Kingdoms. If you want both angels and fantasy, Ah! My Goddess or Sousei no Aquarion is the way to go.

Hyouka
Houtarou Oreki was forced by his elder sister, Tomoe, to join the classic literature club. It turns out that by joining the club, he becomes involved in a case regarding a female member's uncle from 33 years ago. This is the beginning of an adolescent mystery. Houtarou and Tomoe are voiced by Yuuichi Nakamura (Tomoya Okazaki in CLANNAD, Gray Surge in Fairy Tail) and Satsuki Yukino (Kaname Chidori in Full Metal Panic!, Kagome Higurashi in Inuyasha). Yasuhiro Takemoto (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star) will direct, Shouji Gatou (Full Metal Panic!, The Tower of Druaga) will compose, and Kyoto Animation (CLANNAD, AIR) will animate.
Premier Date: Sunday, April 22, 2012
Genre(s): Mystery
Episodes: 21
US License Status: Unlicensed
Expectations: Decent -- This show screams Full Metal Panic! Season 4 temporary placeholder. Just as an fyi, it seems Tomoe isn't a main character so this is not quite a full Full Metal Panic! cast but it's damn close enough. If there's one thing about this show, it's that in most cases KyoAni will succeed with whatever show it does. The show has a lot of potential and definitely a series to keep an eye on this season.

AKB0048
An original work inspired by the all-female idol group AKB48 and created by Satelight (Fairy Tail, Noein -to your other self-) and Shouji Kawamori (Sousei no Aquarion, Macross Frontier). It is the 21st century and a world war has broken out. This resulted in the destruction of the environment, forcing humanity to leave Earth. Thus began the Star Calendar. Under this new calendar, entertainment and songs of any sort have been heavily regulated, most of which banned. However, one illegal revival group attempts to change that. They are known as AKB0048, which is named after the idol group AKB48 that led to Earth's bitter end. Yoshimasa Hiraike (Solty Rei, Amagami SS) will serve as director and Mari Okada as series composer.
Premier Date: Sunday, April 22, 2012
Genre(s): Music, Sci-Fi
Episodes: 26?
US License Status: Unlicensed
Expectations: Satisfactory -- Can anyone say iDOLM@STER Xenoglossia? The only difference would be a seemingly lack of mecha, but the sci-fi setting is giving off the same vibes. I originally had pretty poor expectations for this show but seeing the staff now makes me want to have a second take. Shouji Kawamori always comes up with interesting premises and Mari Okada has been on a wining streak with good shows as of late. Yoshimasa has generally been a decent director and I loved Solty Rei so I think this actually merits a watch to at least half the series before making any serious conclusions.

Rollover TV Series (To be Updated)
*does not include shows that have continued indefinitely for 2+ years. Also does not include OVAs/OADs, or movies. Parentheses = starting season. e.g. Fairy Tail (Fall 2009) has been removed since starting October 2011, it will be continue on to its third year
